Sharon Smith joins our staff as the 5th and 6th grade Math teacher. She holds a Bachelor of Science Interdisciplinary Studies degree with a Reading specialty from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. She has been part of the Island schools since 2003- as a parent and substitute teacher. Prior to teaching here, Mrs. Smith worked for the YMCA in Austin for Mother’s Day Out as curriculum designer, director and teacher, and has 20+ years experience as a restaurant manager.
Michele Ortega joins our staff as the 5th grade Language Arts and Social Studies teacher. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education and Masters of Arts in Education from The University of New Mexico. She holds certifications in Language Arts and Social Studies. She has been part of the Island schools since 1999- as a parent and volunteer. Prior to working at SMA she was Volunteer coordinator at SLC and SMA for 3 years.
Raymond Kanipe teaches fifth and sixth grade science teacher. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, and Geology and a Master of Science in Secondary Education both from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. He has taught for 15 1/2 years. His certification is grades 4-8 Science. Prior to teaching, Kanipe worked for the Texas State Offenders Education Program working with alcohol and drug offenders as a counselor and administrator. Shannon Trial is the 7-8th grade Language Arts and Journalism teacher. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Austin College and Master of Arts in Journalism from the University of Texas. She holds certifications in English, Journalism, and Social Studies. She has14 years of teaching experience. Prior to teaching, she worked for eight years as a book publisher and graphic designer. Ashley Knotts Ashley Knotts teaches 7th grade Texas History, Theatre Arts, Communication Applications, and Current Events. She holds a BA in history from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. She received her teaching certification through Region IV and University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas. Her certification is EC-4 Generalist, 4-8 Social Studies/ELA, and K-12 Theatre Arts. She taught four years in Spring ISD, and is currently teaching her eighth year at Seashore Charter Schools and serving as a board member of the Port Aransas Community Theatre.
Heather Sheffield joins our staff as a 6th Grade Language Arts teacher, PE, and basketball coach. She brings 14 years of experience teaching everything from first to eighth grade and serving as a school counselor. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a specialization in Health from Texas A & M University in Commerce, TX and has begun work on a Master’s degree in School Counseling from Oklahoma State University. In her spare time, she enjoys surfing and playing tennis.
C.C. Fawcett is one of our Special Education Aides. She holds an Associates Degree in Instructor of Technology in Military Science and an Associates Degree in Dental Assisting. She is currently working on her Bachelors Degree in Occupational Education with a specialty in Business Management; she will graduate in the spring of 2013. She spent 24 years in the US Air Force as a Professional Military Education Instructor and Commandant. She retired after 24 years of service in February 2012.
Susan Bernal is the 6th and 8th grade Social Studies teacher. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Corpus Christi State University and a Master of Science degree in Secondary Education from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Her certification is grades 6-12 Social Studies Composite and Generalist grades PreK-8. She has taught for 16 years.
Aaron Boudreau is a 2010 Texas A&M Corpus Christi graduate. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in teaching. He teaches fine arts to all grade levels. He is beginning his fourth year teaching and is a Corpus Christi native.
Aaron Cardon teaches 7th and 8th grade mathematics and coaches sports at SMA. He holds a Bachelors of Arts in Mathematical Science from the University of Houston – Clear Lake and an Associate’s Degree in Microcomputer Technology and Networking from Western Technical College. He is certified in secondary mathematics and was previously employed for 7 years as a network technician. He has 4 years experience teaching algebra and has coached basketball, football, baseball, volleyball and soccer for grades K-10.
Jeanne Pasch joins our staff as one of our Special Eduation Aides. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Special Ed. from the University of West Florida specializing in learning disabilities. She brings years of teaching experience from New Orleans, LA., Humboldt Bay, CA., Borinquen, PR, Pensacola and West Palm Beach, FLA., Mobile AL., and Canada thanks to U.S. Coast Guard. Jeanne now plans to stay in Corpus Christi with her family and husband who recently retired from the Coast Guard.
Katie Crysup-Sikes is the 7-8th grade Science teacher. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Science degree from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. She is certified to teach Science 4-8 and Life Science 8-12. Her previous employment was as a Microbiologist with the City of Corpus Christi Nueces County Public Health Department and with Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Department of Physical and Life Sciences as a Lab Director. She has been with SMA for 6 years. She also teaches pre-service teachers at TAMU-CC.
Tara Haney is the Physical Education and Health teacher for all SMA students. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and a Master of Science in Education from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Her previous experience includes three years in teaching and three years as Co-director at Seashore Learning Center. She is certified in K-12 Physical Education and K-12 Special Education. Prior to teaching, she was employed at the Corpus Christi Athletic Club as a gymnastics teacher and Christus Spohn Wellness as a personal trainer. She has been with SMA for 7 years.
Brent Rourk teaches high school Spanish to grades 7 and 8. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Colorado, a Master of Arts degree from Northern Colorado University, and Administrative Certification from Denver University. He has been in education for 29 years. He is certified in History, Anthropology, Gifted and Talented and has endorsements in Spanish and Music. Prior to coming to SMA, he has taught Spanish, Psychology, Government, and Gifted and Talented in Colorado schools, managed restaurants, owned a gift shop and a store fixtures business. Additionally he has taught: Mysteries, Chinese cooking, Futures at a National gifted summer school and Math and science at SLC. He has coached softball, soccer, and baseball. In addition to teaching, he has also been a Principal and Director of Gifted and Talented program in Mapleton, Colorado and an administrator in various capacities in Jefferson and Boulder County schools. Nathan Wilkey is our Special Education Director. A graduate of Flour Bluff High School, he holds an Associates Degree from Del Mar College and Bachelors in Social Work from the University of Texas and is certified K-12 in Special Education. He has 9 years teaching experience.
Rocio Garcia Skinner teaches music and performing arts to all grade levels. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Texas A&M Corpus. She has 7 years of teaching experience at Incarnate Word Academy and West Oso. Ms. Skinner has taught music at SLC and SMA for 4 years.
Colleen McIntyre is President of the Island Foundation and has volunteered to teach Challenge Math and Geometry. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education/Math from Texas A&I University-Kingsville and a Master of Science in Curriculum and Supervision from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. She is certified in Secondary mathematics. She has 12 years of teaching experience and 12 years of tutoring math. Mrs. McIntyre has coached math competitions for eight years, with one of her teams winning a state competition.
Nancy Kneupper holds a Bachelor's of Fine Arts with a teaching certificate from Tx A&M-CC. She previously worked as a claims examiner for an insurance company and office manager for a two way radio communication business in San Antonio. She is currently serves as a Special Education teacher and Art teacher. She is beginning her 4th year at SMA.
Barbara Beeler has been the Director/Superintendent, Title IX Coordinator, and ADA/Section 504 Coordinator of Seashore Middle Academy for 6 years. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Science in Education from the University of North Texas. Her certifications are in English, Social Studies, and Mid-management/Administration. Beeler taught English and Language Arts for 19 years in Dallas ISD, Edinburg ISD, Gregory Portland ISD, Bay City ISD, and Highland Park ISD. She was an assistant principal and principal at Highland Park Middle School for 12 years, for a total of 39 years of experience.
Claudia Detore, AdministrativeAssistant, holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Akron and a Master of Science in Computer Science from the New York Institute of Technology. She worked as a software engineer for ten years prior settling in Corpus Christi. She served on the Island Foundation Board of Directors for several years as Liaison to the private education programs and is an active member of the community.
Perry Pollino, Maintenance for Seashore Middle Academy. He recently relocated to Corpus Christi from the Cleveland, Ohio area. He worked for 26 years in manufacturing,primarily in maintenance. While at Avery Dennison, he was active on the safety team helping to achieve an OSHA VPP Star rating. He was also a new hire safety instructor. He enjoys boating and is the Past Commodore of the West Channel Yacht Club at Lake Erie. He is also a member of the U.S. Power Squadron promoting and teaching boater education. He has been with SMA for four years.
